Actually there's more to it than that

Faulty installation was suspect for a period of time, and may have accounted
for some failures, but the early fuel senders (green capped) were recalled

If the VIN number of your bike falls within the range specified in the
recall, and the fuel sender has never been replaced, then there is a
reasonable chance that it may leak in the future, regardless of how it was
installed

I'm on my 4th fuel sender, and only one of them ever leaked, so slowly, in
fact, that there was never any puddle on the basement floor -- I could sure
smell it though -- no doubt about the fire hazard!

The first sender never worked from day one (zippo on the gauge and the
low-fuel light on continuously) and when it was replaced I specifically made
sure to remind the mechanic that the senders were fragile (someone suggested
that some were possibly being damaged when the tank was laid down
improperly) -- the replacement leaked anyway

Sender #3 worked fine and never leaked, but when the recall was issued,
there was a chance that the one I had was one of the 'flakey' variety, so it
was replaced with 'fixed' version (grey capped) -- that was 10 or 11 months
ago and so far so good
