there are now some cartridge adapters available that let you use
partial cartridges, and which are more reliable than the
little-screwon-tube type.  what's more, all of the stuff reviewed
there is available at www.rei.com.  (look for the "ultraflate", one of
the last ones they list -- it takes either kind (threaded or unthreaded)
of cartridge.
