In what areas did WD40 do miserably? I'd expect it to do well for
corrosion and rust resistance since those are its main claims to fame.

Just curious.  I use a (seemingly now discontinued) product from the
WD-40 people called TAL-5 for chain lube and reserve WD-40 for chain
cleaning.
