I've never bought a helmet mail order and I don't think I would as I really
think it is one of those things you have to try on to be sure of. So I sort
of agree with Arai's position, but I would rather have a free market so
consumers have a choice. I've also never bought an Arai, and probably never
will, as Shoei's have always served me well. But if a dealer wanted me to
pay up front before I could try on a helmet, boots, or gloves, I'd
certainly be finding a different dealer. Just like I won't buy from a
dealer who won't provide a test ride.
To further Blake's example, let's say a helmet costs $400. $25 try on fee =
6%. Then they use the same approach for the motorcycle, $10000 motorcycle
now costs you $600 to try it out.
My dream? That someday the motorcycle industry would model itself after the
ski industry. Can you imagine being able to go to a motorcycle resort where
you could bring your own gear or rent it for the day and then try it all
out on a race track environment? Manufacturers could have a test fleet of
bikes, along with helmets, clothing etc. All for sale or rent. Yeah, it's a
dream.
