what i do in situations like that, rather than risk getting my foot
caught on the luggage, is to stand on the left peg before throwing
my right leg over.  be sure the bike is parked securely, of course,
but this works nicely on either the side- or center-stand.  and do
the reverse getting off...

on the other hand, i did year a story once about someone who had a
sidestand snap when they stood on the peg while it was deployed.
