RE: Rear Brake

I'll second the necessity to use the rear brakes. They provide something
like 30%-40% of your stopping power. And they help to keep the front from
diving. Heck, when I took my cycle test in Virginia, the instructor
specifically looked to see if I was using the rear brake. It would have
cost against my score had I not.

I tend to use mine a fair amount. I'll use it to control my speed when
'pumping' the front brake. Pumping is too strong a word, but I will let up
on the front brake during normal stopping to help reduce heat buildup, and
the rear brake gets used when letting up on the front. I also use it almost
exclusively for that last 5-10 MPH reduction before a complete stop.

I'll second the short lifespan of the rear brakes also. I've got 4500
miles, and though I still have some pads left, I did manage to loose the
rear rotor due most likely to a stuck caliper. I'll be hauling the bike to
the dealer next week in hopes that I can get this repaired under warrenty.
As for riding it to the dealer, it is still to cold where the dealer is
located, my friend's Tiger has to go in for its 6K service, and we would
need to have someone follow in a car for a ride home.

All,
Hearing a lot of denial here. So you don't use your back brakes eh?
Maybe you should ask Triumph to leave them off. I think you'll find that
using them decreases your stopping distance in emergency situations.
The fact remains that the rear brakes wear very quickly on the ST and
the RS. I use mine all the time, just as I have on all my motorcycles. I
switched to an EBS Metal pad. It still wears twice as fast as the fronts,
but much better than the originals which were GONE in 5K miles. I lost the
blister card from the shoes, but the correct shoes are not the ones listed
by EBC. The ones listed are a mirror of the way they must be to fit.
I have had 13 bikes and none wore out pads as quickly as the ST rear
brakes. This is still the best streetbike I have owned. I am waiting for the
2002 Trophy, though.
Ciao,
Bob
