No, blue headlight bulbs are purely for style. They merely attempt to
imitate the expensive HID lighting systems.

True, and a very interesting development, but the UVA bulbs are entirely
different from regular visible-light bulbs. Personally, I wonder about
the long term effects of getting blasted with UVA light while driving,
but I guess that's why Philips (and others) are still doing studies and
haven't released the bulbs for sale yet.

Hmm. They're available in H4 form, which is a 60W/55W format, so I don't
think that's the issue. In fact, Daniel Stern (Stern Lighting,
<http://lighting.mbz.org/>) says he'll be getting them here in the US in
a couple of months. My guess is that it's primarily a
marketing/verification of DOT compliance issue.
