new ST

Hello Mark and fellow Digusters:
The bike has mineral "break-in" oil from day one. You switch to synthetic Mobil1 Racing 4T after the first service at 600 miles and every 6000 mile interval. I change oil at 4500 miles or so since I ride in the big city and can "cook" the oil in stop and go traffic. Read and follow the instructions in the Owner's Manual. By doing so you will not void your warranty. Triumph designed and built the bike and know what they are doing. It's all there in black and white.
The RaceTech fork mods are worth the money! I have ridden my '00 ST for the past 13 months (8,300 miles) and can only say that the stock set of springs are too soft and are not fully adjustable. I switched to the RaceTech system in early September. Better suspension and handling. No DIVE when braking.
While you're looking at additions for the new bike, I'd like to suggest a rear hugger to keep the rear shock/alternator and underseat area clean. The Triumph made part works just fine. Carbon fibre huggers can be had at a much higher price, but are not that much better, just sexier.
I also suggest you get an aftermarket windscreen. The stock screen looks fine but sends a lot of air and bugs directly into your face/chest. Fellow Digester Erik Miner turned me on to the Zero Gravity "DoubleBubble" windscreen which sends air/bugs over my head and makes for a much smoother/comfortable ride. A bargain at $70. I also have the Triumph taller accessory windscreen (which I used and liked all of last Winter and Spring), but the "DoubleBubble" is so effective I have not needed to make the change this year. I rode all of last week in Philadelphia and felt quite comfortable. The AM temperatures were about 18-20 degrees F when I got on the bike with highs in the upper 20's to freezing.
Since I have good circulation, I have no need for heated grips. Others will no doubt share their opinions.
Best wishes and good luck with your new ST,
Howard Stephen Serlick
