Below 3 K you are lugging the motor! I'm almost always running above 
4k , in fact I try to keep it on the boil around 5k where it really 
starts to pull. Also make sure the chain is adjusted correctly.. not 
to loose not to tight, and make sure the engine isn't overfilled with 
oil. Some dealers have been known to ignore the fill marks next to 
the sight glass.
