Yep, 18 (or 17) tooth front sprocket will do that for you.  When my
chain is due for replacement I plan to go to a smaller front.  Maybe I
should stop using WD-40 and TAL-5 in the hopes it will wear out faster.

I only find the heat a problem when using my bike to commute in Florida
summers.  Getting stuck at a major stoplight where you can sit in
traffic for 5+ minutes is the only problem.  If you are moving and/or
cooler than a Florida summer, you are OK.
