A great chance for our side!

Subject: Bruce Babbit "secret visit" to the desert

The following was intercepted regarding a possible visit by Interior
Secretary Bruce Babbitt to a proposed mine site in eastern Imperial
County, California adjacent to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation
Area (a.k.a. Glamis). Edie Harmon is a Sierra Club representative
and the Mineral Policy Institute is actively working to stop mining
in the west. See the second note from Aimee Boulanger, it is this
part of the message that I find alarming. It reinforces my belief
that national environmental organizations do not care how land
management practices and resource extraction policies affect the
locals and in fact try to hide their actions from public scrutiny.

Subject Babbitt at Indian Pass

Bruce Babbitt will be in the Indian Pass area, site of the proposed
lmperial Project gold mine, to announce the Record of Decision (most
assuredly a denial) and have a media event. It would be great to have
a decent passel of folks there to support the Secretary.

Date: Tuesday, January 16
Time: morning, will update as we learn more

Where: Indian Pass area, off Ogilby road, again, will update as we
learn more. We are also hoping that Senator Boxer will be able to
make it, although confirmation hearings for Cabinet posts may prevent
her from making it

Hello everyone. More news on Babbitt's possible visit.
I've just talked wt. Dan Randolph in our Durango office and we agree
that we need to ask everyone to please be discreet with the news of
this event.
We don't need to give the opposition time to organize a protest at
the site. A protest could come in the form of recreationists, miners
or anyone else opposed to Babbitt's policies generally. It could be
great to have a headline about the victory at Indian Pass. We don't
want to see a headline that says "Public divided on proposed mine" or
"Babbitt opposes local desire for new jobs".
So please do plan to come out to the site next week but please don't
communicate the word too widely, or speak with the press yet.

Here's a great chance for motorcyclists and all off-road enthusiasts
to show up at the 'victory celebration' and expose 'Ali Babbitt and
his forty thieves' for the unscrupulous land-grabbing thugs that they
are!
