Off-topic: Pickup trucks

Does anyone know if it's safe to drive for extended periods of time with

a bike resting with its back wheel on the open tailgate of a pickup?
I'm considering buying an F-150 SuperCab (4 doors, short bed) and to
load the Sprint in the bed would require the rear wheel to be resting on

the open tailgate. Is this safe? How much weight are tailgates
designed to carry?

Also, any thoughts on the relative merits of the various 4-door
pickups? I think the Nissan and Ford Explorer Sport-Trac have beds
which are probably too short for my purposes (carrying the bike, which
has a length of 85"), but thoughts on any others (Dodge Dakota or Ram,
the F-150, Chevy Silverado, Toyota Tundra, or others) would be
appreciated. I drove the F-150 two days ago and it was surprisingly
nice... I forgot how much I like 4x4s, although I've only driven
compacts before, never a full size...
