    I have no personal knowledge of this subject,... however:

 ST/RS owner's manual, Maintenance and Adjustment section, Page 88

   "CAUTION: The use of silicone products such as WD-40 will cause
discolouration (Britspeak for staining) of the chrome and must not be
used!"

    There you have it, then,... straight from the front end of the
horse!
