If it is from the early 90's, it should be replaced, not painted. Even if
it hasn't been dropped. I usually replace mine at least every five years.
By then the foam is usually compressed just from normal wear, and most
helmets also suffer from UV exposure. Not to mention that a newer helmet is
sure to have a better design that a 10 year old lid.
