Over the weekend I had a good look at my speedo drive. What I discovered
was that where I had previously thought that the ferrite ring was pressed
onto the steel shaft and not supposed to rotate, when I grabbed it with a
pair of pipe pliers it did spin. It was very stiff though. What had
happened is that the ferrite ring had siezed to the point where the two
metal tangs on the wheel that locate into the notches cutout out of the
ferrite ring had cut their own groove on the edge of the ring. The wheel
could still spin but without engaging with the ferrite. I gently teased the
ring (as the actress said to the bishop) off of the shaft and cleaned
everything up, but in doing so I inadvertantly put a hairline crack in the
ferrite ring. This actually helped, I lightly smeared everything with
lithium grease and the ring slipped back onto the shaft much more freely.
Then I bent the tangs on the wheel slightly to enable them to engage
without running in their grooves that they had previously worn for
themselves. "Assembly is the reverse of removal" and now everything's cool.
It has failed again yet, I've only done one 50 mile journey to work. I'll
post a message if it fails again.
I hope the above is reasonably easy to follow.
cheers - Paul

After searching the archive I notice that I'm not alone with my speedo
probs. The only thing is that I don't understand why its gone wrong. The
cylindrical magnetic sleeve with the two cutouts inside the drive housing
does not spin, i.e. if I locate the housing onto the wheel hub then the
wheel refuses to spin. Wot's going on?
