Re: [ST] Rules of lanesplitting

There are no hard rules about this-- the CVC says nothing about lane
sharing. Generally accepted guidelines include:

- - Don't go more than about 10MPH faster than traffic
- - Don't do it when traffic is moving more than about 25MPH
- - Try to stay generally in one lane, rather than weaving between two

The most common place to split is on the right side of the #1 lane,
although in some places people do it in other lanes as well.

Even more than regular riding, assume that you are invisible, and that
people will be trying to kill you. If people see you coming, many of
them will actually move over to give you a little bit more room, but
sometimes you'll encounter an asshole who will do just the opposite.
I've even heard stories of people opening their doors just to block
progress.

Try to always know where your "out" is-- what you will do if a car
does something stupid. Also, check your mirrors periodically for
other bikes coming up from behind you, and pull into traffic if
someone wants to split faster than you are.

In general, this is NOT fun. It's hard work, and nerve-wracking, and
often quite scary. And if a cop isn't happy with the way you're doing
it, you can be cited-- the most common ticket is unsafe lane changes.
