Lane sharing as it's called by the DMV is legal in California. Theoretically
two cars could share a lane if they would fit in it.

The dangers are obvious. The common sense rules and unwritten rules or
customs (not so obvious) are that you only split the two inside lanes.
1) Stick with this and you have a little better chance of being spotted by
the bimbo putting on her make-up and changing lanes with signalling.
2) Don't split lanes if traffic is moving at or above legal speed limits,
save it for really lousy traffic jams.
3) Cover your brake.
4) Don't travel close behind another bike splitting lanes, often drivers of
cages fail to look for a second bike and change lanes without looking after
the first one passes.
