After 19 years living with the same German manufactured motorcycle, I
'upgraded' to a brand new Triumph ST back in March this year. Years of
nagging from mates and a 0% finance deal helped the transition ! So far I'm
pretty much happy with my purchase. The fairing leaves my gloves wet, &
delivery of a two box pannier system was well behind the 500 mile service
schedule it was originally promised for, but the bike in British Racing
Green is the bizz; & fantastic for the odd 350 mile roundtrip commute, I
sometimes have to perform between Farnborough & Chesterfield via the M1 !
However ... I decided to swap the rack back to the original grab rail & on
retrieval of the bolts furthest from the rear light discovered both threads
were stripped. Closer inspection reveals that the holes in the 'ironwork' on
the sub frame are slightly off center & must have left the factory like
that. In other words the bolts stripped on insertion at the factory, & the
dealer fitting the rack 'probably' replaced them with new, only to do the
same thing.
Has anyone else noticed a similar problem ?
I'm going to talk to the dealer, but drilling it out will only result in an
elliptical hole underneath that won't take a helicoil insert. Currently I've
a couple of smaller diameter bolts holding everything in place.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Incidentally I'm looking to manufacture / purchase a very small cissy bar &
pad to bolt onto the rack somehow. I don't fancy the Corbin combined seat /
backrest offering it looks like it will knock at least 20 BHP off the bike !
anyone done anything similar ?
Cheers !
Paul
