[ST] distance riding

not having done any serious distance riding in a long
time, my wife and i were surprised at how quickly we
ware out on our ST. in preparation for the eastern
rallye next month we have taken several extended
weekend rides (500+ miles round trip) and will attempt
700+ miles this coming weekend.

riding in the heat is certainly a factor. we live in
memphis, and it gets hot and humid in the southeast.
we always travel in full leathers regardless of temps.

age is a factor as well, my wife and i are not as
young as we use to be (late forties). we have found
that about all we can take is a solid hour in the
saddle before a stop for a stretch and some water. 6
to 8 hours of this leaves us drained, beat up, and
exhausted . and, when you factor in the stops, we
average around 30 to 35 MPH when traveling on two lane
hi-ways. (i hate slabbing and avoid it whenever
possible.)

my question is, is this typical? are we just wimps?
what is the group experience here? i know that some of
you travel great distances in the summer heat to
attend these rallyes.

what tips and hints do ya'll have for distance riding
in the "dawg" days of summer?

ride safe, ride often...
