Don't know if they cut the fuel. Leaning out the fuel is a bad bad
thing to do to an engine. I that were the case hitting the rev
limiter would also cause back fires. From my eperience rev limiters
cut the ignition. Which is why you get the definate bap'ity'bap.
I think I've only hit the rev limiter once on the ST, and it was
only for a slight mS. On the 9r I had about 3 or 4 situations where
a BDC was trying to kill me and WFO would work as well if not better
than slaming on the brakes. In those cases all you care about is
keeping the front wheel down and getting out of the way.

If you ever watch drag racng you will notice that the engines tend
to stay dead on a RPM right before the launch. They have 2 stage
rev limiters, one at say 6,000 RPM when the clutch is in, and the
second at the normal place. So at the line they sit there at almost
full throttle, when the clutch gets dropped you just get start
getting 100% of the sparks.
