I had been paying pretty close attention most of the trip (and before) and 
the sound stayed constant.  A tick-tick-tick that was in time with the 
RPM's. Never got any louder.  At the time of catostrophic failure however I 
was listening to Jon Cale, "Fear is a Man's Best Friend". Kinda 
inauspicious, huh?
