What do you need the back brake for, other than the single function you
mentioned? Most of the braking on a modern motorcycle is done by the front.
Under hard braking, the rear becomes very light and thus, the rear brakes
are worthless or prone to locking easily.
20 years ago, the tires available didn't have much in the way of grip when
compared to modern tires. Using the front brakes too agressively could get
you into trouble. Today, tires are so good that you should be able to stand
that Sprint up on its nose and still not lock the front wheel.
Bottom line: Forget about the back brakes unless you are going less than 15
mph.
