I always wear a pair of ear plugs when riding; I use the 
SuperHearos, which have a noise reduction rating (NRR) of 30.  
I'm not sure what the NRR quantifies, unless it is a dB value, 
but then why just say 30dB?  Whatever.  I find that I can still 
hear well enough to be safe, yet the drone of the wind and 
engine noise is significantly reduced and riding is thus more 
enjoyable and less tiring.
