Yo Jules,
Firstly, I hope you don't mind me copying the reply to the list...
The VIN structure definition on the unofficial web site was picked from the
(German) 1994 all-model manual. It certainly matched the VIN of my ST (which
is the example quoted on the web page).
Someone (believed to be Eric Sheley :-) ) extrapolated and added on Z=2001.
However, I've just found some related information (below) which suggests
that after Y it starts with 1.
http://www.mrboston.com/BostonAuto/ConsumerAutoNetwork/vinnumber.html
quotes: "Position ten is the model year. This position is always a letter
from B-Y (except 1, 0 and Q). B starts with the model year 1981 and Y ends
the year 2000. So, if someone says their vehicle is a 1988, you can confirm
this by checking to see that the tenth character is the letter J. "
Can other listers corroborate this for 2001 models? (FAQ update Eric?)
It's good to see that the final drive ratio code matches expectation!
Regards,
