[ST] Chain life..

My 99 ST recently had it's 20,000KM (12,000mile) service and the
mechanic reckons the chain and sprockets will be due in about another
5,000Km.  My last chain driven bike was a Kawasaki GPZ900R and I'm sure
I got close to 40,000Km from the original chain and sprockets.

I'm a bit older now and am very 'nice' to my bike, though I like to go
quick but am still 'gentle".

What do you guys reckon?  Is it a big deal replacing the chain/sprockets
yourself. ( I had no trouble with my GPZ)

BTW my 20,000 service cost me $630.00 (Oz) which is about $315.00 U.S.
