The plate the caliper is mounted on is located by a snap ring, so some
fore-and-aft movement is unavoidable. The plate actually slips onto a
protrusion of the hub bearing carrier and doesn't contact the axle at
all, so tightening the axle nut (on the sprocket side) or the wheel
nut (which only holds the wheel) won't have any effect on it's free
play.

Significant side to side movement should only be seen if the pads have
been pushed back though. If you always have lots of side-to-side
movement (parallel with the axle) then you might want to check the run
out of the rotor. A small amount of side to side movement - especially
if you aren't having any problems with the rear brake - is normal and
unavoidable.
