I think it helps to lay a bead of a waxy semisolid boot dressing such as 
Obenauf's Industrial grade leather protector ((208) 486-6640) or mink oil or 
dubbin into the groove between sole and upper, and melt it in with a hair 
dryer. My feet stayed dry thorough a day of rain on the way to Daytona in 
boots that weren't stated to be waterproof, after such treatment. Dave
