[ST] argh! (was Re: Neutral problems )

never ignore a sudden change in behavior. never ignore your nipples.

i should have known, when, after tightening my clutch cable this morning
in the garage, that it probably wasn't good that i needed to tighten
it again when i stopped for an errand on the way to work. seemed odd
at the time, but "hey, i can get out of first gear -- my bike is fixed!".

but on the way home, as i downshifted and leaned over into a rotary
(traffic circle, for you heathens), i felt a click from the clutch.
test tug on the lever -- another click. "hmmm. wonder what that is."
one or two more "clicks", and voila. lever flopping in my hands. now
i know exactly what it feels like as the individual strands of clutch
cable break, one after another.

i pulled over at the next light (it was red :-) to try and jury rig
something together. i didn't have anything with me (like vise grips)
to grab the cable effectively. i had just heard someone else tell a
story about a similar experience, so i did what they did, and it worked:
i'm pleased to report that the RS is (almost) perfectly happy to be
started in gear, on the roll. a shove or two with your feet help a
bit too. i was lucky, and the 10 or 15 miles i had left to go was mostly
one highway, with only a few lights. i only hit two more red ones, and
used the same technique there.

so, what's up with these crappy cables? sounds like i'm not alone...

but now that i'm going to get a new cable, i should probably get a slightly
longer one to better accomodate my risers, and maybe allow getting rid
of the 90 degree tubing bend down at the bottom -- i recall the archives
saying something about that lightening the feel significantly.
any advice from the "been there's" on what cable i should get?
