I have an RS and it HAS reference marks. A row of centre-punched holes on
the flat side next to the oval slot in the swingarm that carries the axle.
As you adjust the chain the holes gradually disappear behind the square
aluminium blocks each side that the axle runs through. So if you can count
it's dead easy to get both sides the same.
