[ST] Re: K&N Air Filter

> Might not be a great idea

Messing with air boxes generally doesn't work. I had a Hawk, and some Hawk
riders removed the snorkel and even the lid to get more air flow. I tried it
and you could say it sucked ;-)

It was certainly quicker at extreme high revs ... but at the expense of a
great big hole in the mid-range, which made it a lot SLOWER to respond to
the throttle in most real world situations. Great for racing maybe, but crap
on the street. At least I could put the lid back on the Hawk ... once you've
cut a big wound in your loved one it ain't gonna be as easy to change your
mind! The air box doesn't just hold the filter and plumbing, it's carefully
sized and shaped to reflect the air waves around to reinforce induction at
particular revs.

On the RS the most effective performance mod I've made was also dirt cheap
to do, and reversible too - one tooth less on the engine sprocket. It may
have cut the top speed, but if it 'only' does 155 instead of 160+ that's
totally irrelevant to me! What is relevant is that I now have more power
everywhere, and also a MORE flexible engine, which will happily pull from
2000 rpm without lugging (though I have to say I think the carbon can
probably helps a lot at low revs too).
