[ST] Re: ST/ST4

I have some limited experience wth both...was lookingat a ST2, thought it
was boring, disliked the handling, ST4 came out, thought it was less
boring, was unimpressed by the fit & finish (early production model), still
didn't like the handling. This was on short test rides.

Then about two years ago, did a Lotus Tour trip on Corsica and Sardenia;
lots of bike-swapping among the participants, and I wound up with a full
day on a ST4, part of which was with Tenacious G as pillion (guess what,
she'd crashed!!).

Two comments. 1) Really nonlinear steering. You start pushing on the bar to
steer, nothing, push harder, nothing, harder, start to worry,
then...whoops!! I've ridden 916's and 748's and they have it too but not as
extremely. 2) Incredibly sensitive to sidewinds. Riding two-up through
gusty winds, I actually had trouhle keeping it in the lane, and wound up
slowing dramatically. I've ridden the ST two-up through amazingly gusty
winds, and even once right through a dust devil (small vortex wind), with
nothing like the insatbility of the ST4.

So as much as the yuppie in me would like a Duck, the ST# series isn't the
one I would own...
