Try this that happened to me yesterday:
I was on my way to work in medium traffic with a large truck with no trailer
in the next lane, about 15 car lengths ahead. I see something fall from the
back and start to bounce around and spark. Ever try to catch a bouncing
football? (American football, not soccer) Try dodging a bouncing hammer at
freeway speeds. I don't think the guy knew he lost it. I don't think he
would have noticed if I had lost it if the hammer had made contact.

What the heck is going on in NJ? In the past two days I have seen, in
the road:
1) Tuesday, 6:15am. Dark. A deer splattered across two lanes of I-280.
I'm behind an SUV. I start to change lanes and notice debris up ahead
between lanes. I get back in the lane and then realize what I am driving
through. "Gee whiz Wally. What a mess."
2) Tuesday, 5:45pm. Light. A piece of steel. There's a freakin' piece
of steel in the road, just before a curve, right in the way of a really
good line. Not a huge piece but a piece big enough to scare and annoy me.
3) Wednesday, 5:45pm. Light. "F@CK!" The same piece of steel in the same
spot.
4) Wednesday, 6:05pm. Light. A piece of cable lying perpendicular to my
line of travel. I'm not talking television cable. I'm talking about a
piece of 3/4"-1" wire rope with the frayed end about 1 foot from the
center line and the other end somewhere off the side of the road. A
little counter-steer and I'm merrily on my way.
I hope that those are just anomalies and not a sample of things to come.
