[ST] First gear "surging" on RS

My RS, just shy of 10K miles, has what feels to be a pronounced surging in first gear, and sometimes in second. Its kinda wierd, and I keep thinking that it could be the suspension instead, since I don't feel it at higher speeds. If I pull in the clutch and coast, I can feel it, but it isn't as pronounced, perhaps because I'm slowing down??? Any thoughts?
Second, and related question:
I am faced with a dilemna. Since my cage died the true death (putting $1500+ in repairs into a 92 Escort with 160k miles = true death), I am pretty much forced to get a new car.
To get the car I'd really like means I'd have to give up my RS. Otherwise, I can get a much less expensive car (@13k rather than @20k), but it won't be nearly as much car. Orrrrr, I can try to find a true beater, but then I run the risk of the car dying at an inopportune time, again. To compound the dilemna, the car MUST seat 5 in reasonable comfort, ergo a beater mini truck doesn't cut the mustard. Thoughts?
