Peckham: Suddenly I am right. Amazing!
In fact, I've experimented with this. The places where I consistantly scrape
are corners where I have to follow the tire tracks rather than snapping the
bike in because of surface hazards, like gravel, and the one time I grounded
the undercarraige hard enough to throw me off my line was on very rough
pavement.
Peckham: Are you saying that you scrape pegs when you are turning in gravel?
You've got balls, son.
In addition to choosing a different line in these instances, I also was not
hanging off. On the roads I know very well, I tend to hang off a bit, just
because the bikes seems to steer a lot nicer when I do that
Peckham: Hanging-off has no affect on steering. Where do you guys get your
information from?
First off, hanging off changes the COG so that you do not have to lean the
bike over as far, otherwise you'll be scraping metal bits and running out of
tread. Secondly, and this is a question -- what steering do you in a turn?
Where I come from, all steering is done before the turn, then you sit back
and relax and ride through the turn with no bar inputs other than rolling on
the throttle.
The only time hanging off will affect steering is when it is done
incorectly. For example, if you don't hang off well before you start the
turn-in (IOW, you hang-off at the turn in or after the turn-in) this may
throw your line off by changing the COG or, if you use the bars to anchor
yourself when you hang off. Hanging-off is done with the legs, not the
arms. And you should be touching the bars as lightly as possible when in a
turn.
