[ST] 3rd gear is all you need!

Sort of a weird breakage here. I'm at a stop light coming home after work.
The light turns green and I clunk it down into first followed by a second
higher pitched twang. I look down and my shifter has gone flaccid. The
adjustable part of the shifter rod broke and it's just hanging there. It
broke on the threads on the side that attaches to the foot lever. So, crud,
25 miles to get home with mostly freeway. Third gear is all you need. Low
enough to get started from a stop (barely), but high enough to do 70 at
7500rpm. Reached down and pushed it into second when I got into the
neighborhoods. I did have to think, OK, if I push down on the shifter, it
rotates the rod into the transmission clockwise? No, no...counterclockwise?
Wait, I push here, and this bit moves this way, and then this lever changes
direction, and then....HONK!

Looked at it closer when I got home and saw that the shifter pedal had
actually been contacting the rod when pressed down. There was a small gouge
on the rod where the shifter was hitting it. Guess I'll have to be more
careful when adjusting the shifter height when I get it replaced. I'm just
glad it held out for the run around Mt. St. Helens last Thursday!

'00 Blue ST, choose a gear and stick with it.

PS. Great weather forecast for this week in the Pacific NW...anyone on list
riding St. Helens this week?
