Morning Mal,
Cairns huh? I haven't made it up that far, only done some camping out in the
Simpson, up in Mungo and down through to Cooper Pede as well as traveling
through the center and back to Rockhampten.
I use a Thermarest sleeping pad under the sleeping bag. It rolls up well,
doesn't take up too much room, is fairly comfy and is very durable. As for a
pillow, I usually take my sleeping bag stuff sack and fill it with cloths,
then pull a sweat shirt (sloppy joe for you Australiaphiles) or regular shirt
over it for facial comfort.
Since you are running out of room, stuff sacks for sleeping bags with
compression straps are available. I will look into where to buy them for
you, although I would start looking in kayaking and rafting outfitter places.
Cairns has them but you need to get there first. Otherwise search the web,
you'll have the bits you need for the next trip.
Good luck, have fun.
