Could you possibly be experiencing pre-ignition? (otherwise known as
Pinging).
If you are burning lower octane fuel the pinging occurs just as you
described
and sounds like gravel kicking up and hitting the engine casing.

Cheap Enough to try some Techron, but I never had a motor ping only on decel
as opposed to lugging the motor. I would have thought it were the chain,
but it doesn't show any wear or stretch and the rattling is too random.
Imagine uncooked popcorn kernels in a coffe can or an underfilled marracca.
