I went from a 19t to a 18t with a 43 sprocket out back.  If you do 18t, also
swp the rear for a 44, I think you will be much happier.  Going down one in
front still enabled me to use the 108 link chain, although I ended up
shortening it just so I could close up the wheel base some (the axle is a
far forward as possible now).
