Totally concur with your 80% suggestion. AND, for any of
you who are running two sets of gear, heated grips and/or
other toys, check out the Datel Digital voltmeter.
Many of the hard core toy freaks on the ST1100 list run this 
unit to keep a constant eye on their voltage. 

Also, keep in mind that alternator output drops off at lower rpms
so keep an eye on how much you're running when you're idling along 
in a traffic snarl.
