[ST] Engine Break In

G'day All,
Based on the experience i've had racing the odd Norton twin - most
engines built to be raced generally have a little extra clearance in the
piston to cylinder area, usually a few more passes with the hone to give an
extra 2-3 thou. When running this engine in you generally warm it up well,
then give it heaps. Pull the engine down and check for any pick-up marks on
the pistons etc then race it. This ensures a really good seal and i've never
suffered a blow up from this (lots of other things though......)
On a street bike the tolerances are a lot closer and so the manufacturer
wants you to take it a little easier on it. At least thats what i've always
assumed. Can't argue about the gas pressure behind the rings though as thats
a fact. I think i've got a fancy set of blower pistons for the "pig" made by
Hepolite that feature small holes drilled around the outer edge which helps
the gas pressure get in behind 'em. The blown motors have a lot more
pressure.
A friend of mine has an '01 RS which he got from new. The dealer told him
when he took delivery that at the first scheduled service the computer is
checked and it records the history of what the engine has been doing,
apparently they had already knocked back warranty on a Daytona as it hadn't
been run in correctly, although the guy had been going up to red line etc.
Now i don't profess to know much about computers or fuel injection yet, is
the above statement true or have we been fed crap? If it's true theres your
answer, don't overrev the motor during break in.
