Mine does exactly the same thing, unless I warm it up for a few minutes 
before I ride. Mine's a 2001 ST and only has about 900 miles on it.  I look 
forward to it getting better with more miles.  If I warm it up first, I don't 
have to preload the shifter or do any other tricks.
