[ST] Newbie Questions

Hi all!

My name is Paul "Fire Dawg" Bennett and I live in the great state of New 
Hampshire, USA.  I recently purchased a Saphire Blue 01 ST as my first bike 
(graduation present to myself) and am enjoying the motorcycling experience. 
 I have a couple of questions, I tried checking the archives but had 
trouble.

I have been up-shifting regularly without using the clutch.  Is this OK?

What is the most fuel efficient way to run the gears when not pushing the 
bike hard (like around town or just cruising)?  What gear at what RPM?

Hope I am clear on the questions and thanks for the assist.
