Scott,
I can't live without the hard bags.  I do alot of touring.  I pack my workout 
gear to work in them.  Then when at work I put my helmet and JR Ballistic 
pants in them, so I don't have to lug them into the office.  They have also 
come in handy when I needed to make a parts run for a truck repair a few 
years ago.  I have always liked having a locking, reasonably weather proof, 
storage capacity on the bike.
