RE: [ST] (RS) Wolf Can Fitting

Robbie,

As you've already heard I too have had trouble with the RS link pipe. I'm
extremely happy with the silencer itself and for the money I think it is
extremely good value. However the link pipe fitting clearly has not
received the same attention to detail. Whilst it is well made with clean
bends etc. it simply doesn't fit the bike very well. I also wasn't too
happy with the strap Wolf sent me for holding the can. I found it extremely
difficult to make the strap fit tightly around the can, such that when I
actually had everything fitted in a position that I was happy with, there
was still some play in the "construction". What this meant in practice was
that initially the link pipe would not be touching the swing arm, but during
the course of a weeks riding the two would gradually get closer together,
until the only thing I could fit between them was a very thin piece of
paper!

I also wasn't happy with the position of the can on the bike. As a result
of the link pipe being quite long, before bending up to join the silencer,
the can sat quite a long way out from the side of the bike, especially when
viewed from behind. I didn't really like this look and wanted the can to
sit nice and tight into the side of the bike. As I said earlier I also
didn't like the strap. I found it hard to form around the can and there
were lots of small gaps where dirt got trapped between the can and the strap
creating lots of small scratches.

So I went to my local bike accessories shop and started measuring all their
oval silencers for one that had the same dimensions as the Wolf. I was
fortunate enough that they stocked GRP silencers from Italy that use a
lovely stainless steel oval clamp that forms itself to the exact shape of
the silencer when attached and tightened up. I bought the clamp for about
£20 and when I got it home it fitted beautifully around the silencer with no
gaps and held the silencer firmly in place. The new clamp also allowed me
to hang the can tight into the bike. The problem now of course is that the
Wolf link pipe is completely the wrong length and shape. I went to a local
car exhaust place and they made up a temporary link pipe for me, but it's
fairly heavy duty and doesn't look very nice as its designed to be
underneath a car and not seen.

I've now found an exhaust pipe specialist that does proper motorcycle link
pipes in stainless steel and have booked some time with them next month to
get a decent custom made link pipe prepared. Once I've done this I'll post
some pictures and the dimensions etc.

Andy
