Re: [ST] Close Call this Morning
<"I listen to riders here in the Atlanta metro area that are amazed I
commute 50 miles each way to and from work on the interstates all the
time.">
Dave, I've got you beat there. I do 92 miles each way, to & from work on
the interstates from FL east coast to Orlando. (I-95 to Beeline to Greenway
to East-West Expressway) Although I don't take my Sprint RS every day, I
try to take it as much as possible to spread the milage off my cage.
<"Eliminate risk? No, impossible. Learn to manage risk? Absolutely!">
I agree. Impossible to eliminate risk, it must be managed. And managed
through training, both personal and professional. Although I haven't taken
any professional training in sometime, I've been riding on and off-road
since 1987. When up north, I played in front of my house, in the snow, on
my former Yamaha Radian skidding and sliding, and dougnuting just to learn
and have fun. Did same on a dirt bike too. Best way to learn yours and the
bikes limitations, as well as handle the weight.
Although I am now seriously interested in joining a club and doing track
time, and taking a race class just to gain more experience. I practice
managing rear skids and hard front braking on my own, but I've never had the
balls to front skid/stoppie, and from what I've been reading that sounds
important too. So the best place to learn that is under professional
instruction/supervision.
I think the best advice is ("A man's got to know his limitations" - Dirty
Harry) as well as the motorcycle's limitations, and the best way to do that
is to push the limits in a controlled environment.
