For the first 600 miles or so, the bike uses "break-in oil", a very simple conventional oil. At the first service, the oil is completely drained and replaced with a FULL SYNTHETIC. Thereafter, the engine use FULL SYNTHETIC only. All of this is in your owner's manual.....

Triumph's recommended oil change interval is 6000 miles. That's how long I went between the breakin and my first oil change, and I've done 5,000 since then. I'll believe Triumph's assessment that it doesn't NEED to be changed before 6,000 miles. I've also noticed that at about 4,500 miles the shifting begins to degrade, a situation that clears up instantly with the oil change. So it comes down to whether you want to pony up the $45-60 per change that doing it yourself will involve, plus your time.

I believe that the FAQ page has a fuller treatment of the oil situation, and since the Oil Thread is scheduled to start in February (it is scheduled for Feb, right Dawgs?), lots of other folks will be responding as well.
