Thanks so much, Dan. I'll be calling around this week to see if anyone
here has a balance shaft plug in stock.

I have mixed emotions about what I hope to find. On the one hand, at
least then I would know that something was definitely wrong with the
bike (despite 2 dealers telling me it was nothing out of the ordinary)
and know exactly what it is. What to do about it would be my next
problem.

I'm sure that the dealer that rebuilt the engine in my bike
(incorrectly, this would make it seem) last February before I owned it
would deny that they did anything wrong and wouldn't knock anything off
the price of a rebuild (not that I'd trust them to do the job right,
anyway). When I took it in to them when I first got it, one of their
guys told me it had more vibration because when they rebuilt it, they
used slightly different bearings than OEM.

I'm guessing an out of sync balance shaft is not the end of the world,
since if that's the case, I've got over 15k miles on my bike in that
condition. I suppose I could just live with it for another 2 or 3
years--what I expect to be the lifespan of the bike for me.

I shudder to think what splitting the cases would cost in labor. Plus,
I don't trust either of the 2 dealers closest to me. I might seriously
consider taking it down to Austin (220 miles) to Lone Star BMW/Triumph
to let them do it. Wonder if a shop would tell me what the "book time"
to do that job is? I might pull the engine myself to reduce some of the
cost.

Or I might just get myself a shop manual, make a shopping list of parts
and tools, and tear it down myself. Hell, I'm not doing anything else
right now anyway. Later, I sign on as a mechanic at STeve & Tom's
Triumph Shop.

If the balance shaft is perfectly aligned, then I'd be even more scared.
I'd guess that would mean that some other internal engine part is bad.
A main bearing, or the timing chain, perhaps, from what I've read.

Anyway, just thinking out loud. Dan, thanks again.

Laters,
Brian
