Lisa,

If the engine tries to crank but does so slowly, you may have a
bad connection. Beg, borrow or steal a digital mulitmeter, set
it on the 2v. scale and check for voltage drops, reading battery
(+) to the starter (+) connection and also battery (-) to bare
metal on the starter housing (-), while attempting to crank the
engine. The readings you get are the *difference* between the
two points. Any reading over .5 - .7v. *while current is flowing*
(cranking or attempting to crank) is excessive.

If the engine won't crank, select the 20v. scale. Check for
battery voltage at the battery cable connector on the starter and
then take a reading at the small wire connector (signal wire) on
the starter while attempting to crank. You should see battery
voltage when the starter button is depressed. If you have
battery voltage at both starter terminals and a good ground with
no crank, you may have a bad starter. If there is no signal
voltage then you likely have a bad switch (sidestand, clutch,
neutral, kill or ign.). Sometimes a water dispersant (WD-40)
will help. Also look at the loom coming out of the ign switch.
Broken wires are not uncommon here.

Good luck,
