My bike was warmed up, having just ridden it the 30 miles to Tom's
house, minus a 30 min or so cooling off period. Also, I'm not sure
Tom mentioned this, but he stripped the corners of the filter with the
filter wrench (the kind that's a cap you put over the end of the filter
and turn with a socket)--and yes it was the right size. Then he tried
the wrapping-a-strap-around-it technique, but still couldn't get it to
turn. That was a lot of torque.

As for not eating my wheaties, well, I don't eat breakfast, so yeah if
it was just me you could say that, except that:

a) Tom was also there and he's not a small guy.

b) his bike had the exact same problem, and had been previously changed
by the same dealer

c) when I just changed my self-installed filter again last week, I was
able to remove it by hand (and yes, it was on tight enough that it
didn't leak any oil).

The theory that someone didn't lube the filter ring with oil sounds like
a likely one. Or someone just thinks you have to tighten oil filters
down to 80 foot pounds. Either way, the fact that that someone is
employed in a motorcycle shop scares me.

Laters,
Brian
