I don't know every detail, but here's what I do know:

new high pressure diecast cases, for better quality, consistentcy, lower
weight. Moved the alternator from a gear driven type to the end of the
crankshaft for efficiency. Intake valves are bigger, exhaust valves a bit
smaller. I think (not certain) that valve stems are smaller diameter. New
closed-loop fuel injection (from Keihin?), Sagem is ditched. New FI mapping.
Quieter running valve gear.

The downside, to me, is that the new engine is really ugly to look at.
Blocky, industial, and just how many bolts does one need to hold a cover on?
Not an issue on full faired bikes like the Sprint ST or Daytona, but looks
crappy on the RS and Tiger. (Though I think it is more acceptable on the
Tiger given it's mission.) I also wonder if the output of the alternator is
changed for the worse. The extrnally mounted one on my 2000 RS puts out 580
watts. What's the rating on the 2002 spec engine?

Ken M.
